Preventing Break Ins to Your Projects

break-inOver the weekend, we had an attempted break in at the project at Alcove in Meriden. The culprit was unsuccessful in his/her attempt to get into the house, but it got me thinking about the business I am in and how I will be dealing with issues like this for the foreseeable future. It also got me thinking that if this had happened early in the project, the person would have gained entry to the house and could have stole materials, vandalized the home, etc. Thankfully, we had already replaced the doors and windows and this is ultimately the reason they were not able to get it. If this had been the old, weaker doors and windows when we originally purchased the home, they would have busted right through them and we would be looking at a potential disaster for our project.

When starting your home renovation project, it should be your first step to ensure that all entries (doors, windows, hatchways, etc) to the home are secure and strong. If they are not, then they should be replaced as soon as possible.

Along with completely securing the entries to the home, some other tips to prevent break ins to your vacant project include:

  • Make sure all lighting on the outside of the house is in proper working order and make sure they are left on throughout the night. If possible, make the investment to get motion detecting lights. This will lower your electricity bill and I think it could startle someone walking toward the house in an attempt to do harm.
  • Contact the local police and let them know that you are renovating a vacant home in the area that could be prime for a break in. The police will most likely agree to make an extra effort to drive by the property more often.
  • Talk to the neighbors in the area and have them look after the property while no one is there. Give them directions to call the police at any suspicious behavior going on around the house.

There are countless other ideas for securing your vacant project, but the overall point is to take the necessary steps to secure the house and do it early in project to avoid any dilemmas later.
