Wall-To-Wall Carpeting
Wall-to-wall carpeting has many virtues, soft and forgiving. It creates visual warmth with its texture as well as real warmth with its insulative properties, and it also absorbs sound. Carpeting can also hide a multitude of flaws in the floor beneath. It can be permanently installed directly on plywood subfloors. With the right fiber and weave, and with consistent maintenance, carpeting can last for decades.
Choosing the carpet.
Buy the best-quality carpeting that you can afford for the particular use. Have it installed by a professional who can estimate yardage and suggest appropriate padding. Always keep these factors in mind.
Construction
How the yarn is “tufted” or lacked into its backing – determines to a large extent its texture and appearance. Tufting may be level, with uniform-height loops; multilevel, with two or more levels to create patterns; or cut pile, in which the tops of loops are sheared, leaving individual yarn tufts. Cut piles – including velvets, plushes, and textures – are the most popular constructions sold today.
The “Look”
The look of carpeting is further defined by color and pattern. Dark colors impart coziness. Light colors make rooms seem larger, and they’re more practical than they once were with new stain and soil-resistant finishes.
Fiber Content
Fiver content describes the origin, whether natural or synthetic, of the carpet. Roughly 97 percent of all carpet produced today uses synthetic fibers.
Performance
This is a qualitative measure based on yarn density, twist and the process by which the twist was “set,” or finished. Density refers to the closeness of the tufts: the denser the better. Twist describes how the yarn is wound around itself: the tighter the twist, the more resilience and durability. The yarn may be set by steam or heat-set; heat-set is more durable.
