The Importance of Padding in Carpets
All carpets should be laid over a separate layer of padding, except those with a cushion backing attached. Padding reduces the matting and crushing that comes from foot traffic and furniture. It also prevents slippage and adds to the carpet’s insulating and sound-absorption properties.
Carpet padding comes in a variety of weights, densities and thicknesses. Choose a firmer grade in high-traffic areas. Never buy one more than 7/16 inch thick because padding that is too thick leaves the tufting unsupported. The basic types of underlayment and their features are below:
Hair or felt padding wears well and gives good support, but it may stretch and shed over time. It is also susceptible to mildew in humid climates and may aggravate some allergies.
Rubberized felt padding also wears well and gives good support, but it is less likely to stretch.
Sponge or foam-rubber padding is made in flat or waffled sheets that are resilient and resistant to mildew. Foam rubber is nonallergenic.
Urethane foam padding is made in a continuous, flat sheet. It also resists moisture because it is strong and durable. A good quality urethane foam pad will retain half its thickness when you squeeze it.
