In shaping up surfaces that are past their prime, washing, removing stains and completing small repairs are the first steps. Painting and wallpapering will take you to the finish line in high style. Walls and ceilings are often treated as mere background to any home’s decor but that doesn’t mean that they should be ignored. Keeping them at their best will make everything else in the room look better and plus it will also make any decorating you do a snap.

So before redecorating any surface, make sure that it is clean and smooth. Plaster and painted drywall in good condition require little more than dusting. What you should do first is remove all items that are hanging on the wall. Next, go after the cobwebs with a feather duster or the dusting brush accessory of your vacuum cleaner. Then dust the ceiling and your wall with a broom-end covered with a flannel or other soft cloth pillowcase. The pillowcase make a handy cover and the flannel is textured just enough to grab dirt well. Secure the pillowcase at the open end with a piece of string or large rubber band. Change the case or turn it inside out whenever it gets dirty. Finally, dust or vacuum baseboards and windowsills.

Now let’s go to the washing and painting business of your walls. Walls and ceilings that are in heavily trafficked areas, near the kitchen or subject to pollutants from a fireplace or furnace will likely to have a uniform film of grease on them and will need to be washed thoroughly. Washing walls take a lot of preparation time and hard work but it is essential if the old wall is dirty and the new paint or paper you are about to apply is to adhere properly. But if you don’t have the time or inclination to wash walls  and ceiling yourself then by all means hire someone. The cost typically runs to about a third of what a professional paint job costs. To check whether you need to wash a wall, spot clean an inconspicuous area. If you see a big difference between dirty and clean then washing is in order.
