How To Clean Wood Paneled Walls

Most paneling, both real wood and simulated wood grain, come from the manufacturer with a pre-applied finish. They can usually be cleaned with nothing more than a damp cloth to remove normal household stains and finger marks. Brighten surfaces with any liquid wax cleaner as an alternative, applied lightly. Wipe away the wax until you no longer see smudge marks when you rub the panel with a clean, dry finger.
- Use a mild soap or detergent for heavy soil problems. Try to avoid cleansers with coarse abrasives or solvents which could damage the protective surface. Textured paneling is best cleaned with a vacuum cleaner’s dusting brush.
- To eliminate light scratches that go no deeper than the finish, apply a coat of clear wax with a damp cloth. Always rub with the grain. Deeper scratches that reach through to the wood, particularly when the panel is stained a dark tone, may require a filling. Use a color-matched putty stick which is available in most home centers. Finish by waxing and buffing for uniform appearance.
