Wood-Framed Windows

Wood-framed windows were the traditional choice of the past and offered many benefits. They can be painted or stained. And quite apart from the insulating properties of the glass, the wood frame itself has a reasonably good R-value.

Aluminum Windows

Generally, aluminum windows are less expensive than wood and they need less maintenance. But they tend to be less attractive particularly in older homes with more traditional architecture. And they are not as thermally efficient as wood frames.

Vinyl Windows

Vinyl windows have become the norm recently. These windows are very efficient when it comes to holding in both heat and cool. Many homeowners are replacing their aged and now less efficient wood framed windows with vinyl windows because of there efficiency and longevity. Though these windows carry some negatives, like not being paintable, people are opting for them because everyone is concerned with saving money and using more “energy efficient” products on their homes. This is especially important in the colder parts of the nation with the rise in fuel costs. Read more about the nation’s push for energy efficiency in this post

In washing windows use either window-washing fluid or a home brew combining a capful of liquid dishwashing soap per gallon of water. Wash the window from top to bottom so that the solution doesn’t drip onto previously washed surfaces. Wash with vertical strokes outside and horizontal strokes inside. This will make it easier to find streaks and remove them. Rubbing alcohol sprayed from a bottle also makes an excellent window cleaner. It removes greasy smudges, evaporates quickly, does not freeze in cold weather and leaves no residue.

Tip!

To make windows gleam a squeegee and a sponge are the best tools to use for washing windows. Professionals say the secret to windows is to use very little detergent and not too much water. Squeeze out the sponge before you apply the washing solution. Squeegee the glass immediately to prevent streaking. Wash when the sun is not shining directly on the window.
