Have an oil burner serviced at the beginning of every heating season by your heating contractor or oil supplier. A thorough annual checkup conducted by a professional should include changing the oil filter, cleaning the fan, replacing the burner nozzle, inspecting the igniter assembly and inspecting vent connections.

Clean Air Indoors

The oil crisis in the 1970s led to a nationwide effort to make houses more energy efficient. Homes were insulated and weather-stripped to save on heating fuel. But by doing so houses lost the fresh air that used to seep through the cracks in the siding and loose joints around windows. If you have a new house it probably has a built-in air ventilation system. If you live in a tight old house here are things you can do to fight stale air.

  • Open windows at opposite ends of the house to get a cross breeze.
  • Use an exhaust fan to take out kitchen odor and bathroom moisture.
  • Consider an electrostatic air cleaner to filter large pollution particles out of your air and collect smaller particles like a magnet. It can be installed in the dusts of a forced-air heating system or a free-standing unit can service a room.
