Space Heaters
Space heaters can supplement a central system or they can be the main heat source in areas that have short, mild winters. It often helps to use a ceiling or box fan to ciculate the air heated by a space heater. Choose space heaters that are economical to operate, not just inexpensive to buy.
Gas Space Heaters
A gas heater is expensive to install but may save money in the long run. A gas space heater must be vented. An unvented unit emits dangerous combustion fumes and violates the housing code in nearly all areas. On a properly vented unit, harmful fumes are exhausted outdoors through a flexible flue. If you have any doubts about the safety of a gas space heater, don’t hesitate to have it checked. You can install a carbon monoxide detector in case the vent becomes blocked. Clean a gas space heater regularly. With the gas off, remove the cover and vacuum out any dust using a brush attachment and a crevice tool. If the unit has a pilot light adjust the flame so that it burns smoothly without sputtering. If the burner had an air shutter, adjust the air-gas mixture so that it has a well-balanced flame as on a gas furnace.
