Air Conditioners, Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers
Staying comfortable when the weather is hot is a luxury for some and a necessity for others. The most sensible path to comfort often involves lowering the humidity level in summer or raising it in winter. In many regions, summertime comfort can be achieved only with air conditioning. But if you expect to use the air conditioner for only a month or two out of every year, consider less expensive alternatives. Often a whole-house fan, perhaps combined with a dehumidifier is all you need to make summers more tolerable. If you do choose air conditioning, find the right type for your situation to save money in the long run.
Types of Air Conditioners
Window or room air conditioners are fairly easy to service and install provided you have an adequate elecrical connection. You can choose from units designed to cool a small bedroom to large models suitable for cooling two or more rooms. The bulk of a window unit – condenser coil and compressor – projects out the window while the fan and evaporator coil are on the inside just behind the front grill. The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air that passes over it. Refrigerant carries the heat to the compressor and condenser in an outdoor unit are connected b tubes to an evaporator coil and blower indoors in a forced-air duct system. Central air must be professionally installed.
