Find An Energy Efficient Air Conditioner
Like most electrical appliances, air conditioners have become much more energy efficient in recent years. Air conditioner manufacturers are required to meet minimum standards for energy efficiency but some models still can be significantly more energy efficient than others.
- Check the yellow Energy Guide sticker on each model. Window air conditioners are given an Energy Efficiency Rating (EER). The higher the EER, the lower the energy consumption.
- Central air conditioners are rated with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER). The higher the SEER, the better the energy efficiency.
Installing A Window Air Conditioner
- Installing a window unit is not complicated but the air conditioner will be heavy. The unit should come with complete instructions and installation hardware, and your retailer can offer additional suggestions. Begin by assembling the casing.
- Place the casing in the window mount and add the exterior bacing if it is required with your unit. Attach the window-mounting kit to thewindow frame. Be sure the unit will tilt down and away from the window on the outside. Screw down the pieces firmly.
- Carefully slide the air conditioner into the casing. Pull the top window sash down, and slide the expandable curtains outward to seal the opening. You may need to use foam weather stripping or removable rope caulk to completely seal the opening inside.
