For best results, install a window air conditioner as close as possible to the area where it will do the most good. If you mush choose one room to cool then your best choise might be a bedroom. That way, you can count on comfortable sleeping as well as a cool spot for reading and watching TV. Most window air conditioners are designed to be installed in standard double-hung windows, those with sashes that slid up and down. You can also find models that will fit in casement windows, those with sashes on hinges.

Installing In A Wall
If no window is available where you want the air conditioner installed, look for a unit that can be installed in a wall. The installation is considerable more complex because a carpenter must cut through the wall and frame a suitable opening. This may be only a day’s work on a frame house but it will be much more involved and expensive on a masonry house. A wall installation does give you the opportunity to put the air conditioner on a less conspicouos side of the house and it won’t cut down on window views.
