Here are the steps on how to replace missing grout:

Step 1:

Scrape away the old grout with a grout saw, this is an inexpensive tool available at tile dealers and home centers. Grout is hard so expect the job to take some time. When all the grout is removed, vacuum the area thoroughly. Wash the surrounding surface with a solution of vinegar and water.

Step 2:

When the washed area is dry, mix new grout as directed on the label. Spread grout with a rubber float as shown above. Pack the grout firmly into the joints, not minding the mess which you can take care of later.

Step 3:

Remove excess grout with a wet sponge. After 30 minutes, use a kitchen knife to shape the grout joints to match the existing grout. Let the grout dry an hour. Use a soft cloth to remove any remaining haze. After the grout has set, 24 hours or more, apply a grout joint sealer.

Seal the surface of freshly cleaned or new grout to make maintenance easier. When grout is properly sealed it will be less porous and less susceptible to stains. Use a sponge to apply a commercial grout sealer. Then let the sealer dry. Do not use the tub or shower until it is completely dry.
