Before starting a repair, turn off water to faucet, open the spout to drain, and close the drain. Most drips in a cartridge faucet are caused by worn cartridge. In the faucet shown below, a special tool is needed to remove the cartridge. Some cartridges can be lifted out with pliers. Take the old cartridge with you to buy a duplicate. To stop leaks at the faucet base, replace the O-rings at the top and bottom of the cartridge housing.
- Pry off the decorative cap with a screwdriver or pocket knife. You may also have to remove a plastic piece that indicates the direction for rotating the lever to get hot or cold water.
- Use a hex wrench to remove the retaining nut that holds the handle in place. As you remove the handle, note the position of the clip beneath
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the handle clip to the top of the cartridge. Pull out the clip.
- Holding the faucet spout, remove the cowling from the faucet body by twisting it off counterclockwise.
- Remove the nylon ring beneath the cowling. With a large adjustable wrench, remove the retaining ring.
- Pull out the cartridge with pliers or in this case, with a special pull tool provided by the manufacturer. Drop in the new cartridge and reassemble faucet.
