Before starting a repair, turn off water to faucet, open the spout to drain, and close the drain. Most drips in a cartridge faucet are caused by worn cartridge. In the faucet shown below, a special tool is needed to remove the cartridge. Some cartridges can be lifted out with pliers. Take the old cartridge with you to buy a duplicate. To stop leaks at the faucet base, replace the O-rings at the top and bottom of the cartridge housing.

  1. Pry off the decorative cap with a screwdriver or pocket knife. You may also have to remove a plastic piece that indicates the direction for rotating the lever to get hot or cold water.
  2. Use a hex wrench to remove the retaining nut that holds the handle in place. As you remove the handle, note the position of the clip beneath
  3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the handle clip to the top of the cartridge. Pull out the clip.
  4. Holding the faucet spout, remove the cowling from the faucet body by twisting it off counterclockwise.
  5. Remove the nylon ring beneath the cowling. With a large adjustable wrench, remove the retaining ring.
  6. Pull out the cartridge with pliers or in this case, with a special pull tool provided by the manufacturer. Drop in the new cartridge and reassemble faucet.
