Measuring and Installing Window Blinds
For an “inside mount,” measure the width inside the frame from jamb to jamb, measure the length from the top of the upper sash to the bottom of the lower sash. For an “outside mount,” include the left and right frame sides in the width and the frame top to sill for the length. Usually installation will be within the window’s frame unless enough darkness cannot be achieved. Installation is ideally a four-handed job, one person holds the raised blind while the other uses a level to arrange the blind straight and then marks the holes. For an inside mount, mark the brackets inside the window frame, for an outside mount, on top. Separate the blind from the brackets. Pre-drill small holes for the screws and then screw the brackets in place. Slide the blind into the brackets. Hold a continuous pull-chain bracket downward until tight, mark the holes and then screw it to the jamb.
Useful Tip: Venetian Blind-Dusting Brush
- The quickest way to clean venetian blinds is to use a tool made especially for the job. The woolly cleaning portion of the brush is especially slatted to accommodate cleaning the top and bottom of the slat simultaneously. Lower the blind, open the slats, spray the brush with a dusting spray, if appropriate for the blind material, and then slide the brush across the flat sections.
- Use absorbent cotton gloves and your fingers to substitute for the slotted tool.
