Installing Curtain Rods
If you are having window treatments made for you then the supplier will measure the windows, determine the rods you need and install both rods and window treatments as part of the package. To do it yourself, first decide on the style and length if window treatment elements you want. You can install the rod just above and outside the width of the window frame to give the window the illusion of being larger or to maximize available light after the draperies or curtains are hung. Or you can install the rods just at the edges of the window frame to keep a trim appearance. If windows are near the ceiling, try installing the rods just below the ceiling to give the window and the room more height. Spring-tension rods and wooden rods with inside brackets attached to the inside of the window jambs. Follow the instructions supplied with the rods to perform the actual installation.
Do-It-Yourself Measuring
The finished length of a curtain or drapery depends on its style and the rod’s style. Here are two examples:
- Finished lengths for side panels on a plain curtain rod. You can allow ½ to 3 inches above the rod for a heading, an optional ruffle above the rod if you like then add the depth of the rod plus ½ inch of ease. Add the distance from the bottom of the apron or to the floor minus ½ inch so fabric will not drag on the floor.
- Finished lengths for side panels on a decorative traverse rod with rings. Measure from the bottom of the rod to one of the three length positions described above.
