Caring for Wooden Furniture and Frames
Nothing can match the beauty of wood furniture and as centuries-old antiques prove, it can last for generations if properly cared for. The same goes for the wood framing on your mirrors and art. Water, rough handling and negligence are wood’s worst enemies. This is true for any piece of furniture or accessory that is completely or partially constructed of wood. However with a few precautions and proper care, you can make good wood furnishings, ornate or plain, new or old – endure for generations to come.
Shopping for Wood Furnishings
When shopping for new wood furniture or furnishings, be sure to read the descriptive labels. Determine the type of construction and the kinds of wood included – solid, plywood, veneer or inlay. Also determine the finish – paint, gilt, varnish, shellac, or oil –and any other details which will help you care for the piece properly. Shopping for used furniture can be quite a different matter since informative tags are not attached. Your source, antique dealer, auction house, estate sale or second-hand shop should be able to correctly identify a piece of furniture’s wood and the features that make it special especially if a sizeable sum is being asked.
