Charitable groups, including the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries as well as local churches and shelters, accept many items – flatware, dishes, toys, clothing and furniture as long as they are clean and in good condition. If you can’t get your donations to the organization, ask if there is a pick-up service. To reach more directly into the community, contact churches, synagogues or state hospitals to find people who are setting up a home after a fire or other disaster and need help.

Recycling Bins

One way to encourage recycling in your house is to make it easy to collect recyclable materials. Here are three options:

  • Create your own recycling center by building a three-tier plywood shelf designed to hold laundry baskets designated for recyclable items.
  • Buy a home recycling system such as those that hold three wastebaskets inside a plastic PVC pipe frame.
  • In remodeling a kitchen, plan for tip-out recycling bins, faced to match your cabinets.
