Wood-framed windows are the traditional choice and offer many benefits. They can be painted or stained. And quite apart from the insulating properties of the glass, the wood frame itself has a reasonably good R-value. Generally, aluminum windows are less expensive than wood and they need less maintenance. But they tend to be less attractive particularly in older homes with more traditional architecture. And they are not as thermally efficient as wood frames. A third choice is wood windows with vinyl and metal cladding on the exterior. These typically combine good R-values with low maintenance and moderate prices. Many have sashes designed for easy removal during cleaning. Cladding is not paintable. Your color choice in exterior frames is limited to white and neutrals. [...]
